Parent Code of Conduct & Expectations
– Melbourne Wolves Basketball Club –
CODE OF CONDUCT
The Melbourne Wolves Basketball Club’s Codes of Conduct & Expectations are aligned with Basketball Victoria to give participants a guide to the expectations of Southern Basketball Association and Basketball Victoria for their behaviour and conduct.
Basketball is a recreational activity for enjoyment and health. The BV codes of conduct can be located at:
http://basketballvictoria.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/BV-ALL_Codes_of_Conduct.pdf
The Codes of Conduct & Expectations are intended to assist players, coaches, administrators, parents and spectators to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their involvement in basketball.
As a Melbourne Wolves parent, you have fully committed to abiding by the Parent Code of Conduct & Expectations upon registering your child on PlayHQ. It is critical that each parent understands the Parent Code of Conduct & Expectations and is familiar with the behavioural and attitudinal expectations of every Melbourne Wolves parent.
A breach of the Parent Code of Conduct & Expectations may result in disciplinary action by the Southern Basketball Association Committee, a Tribunal or the VJBL and may result in parents being banned from attending training, games or other functions. Repeat offences may result in the parent’s child being suspended or delisted from the team or expelled from the Association altogether.
PARENTS CODE OF CONDUCT & EXPECTATIONS
- Encourage children to participate for their interests, not yours.
- Encourage children to focus on playing the game, skill development and good sportsmanship,
reducing the emphasis on winning. - Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
- Do not criticise your or others’ children in front of others. Never ridicule or yell at a child.
- Remember a child learns best by example. Applaud good play by all teams.
- Accept & respect decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability.
- Set a good example by your own conduct, behaviour and appearance.
- Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
- Be inclusive and respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person, regardless of their gender, race, ability, cultural background, conflict, religion or other factor irrelevant to the game.
- Encourage players to play by the rules and to obey the rules and decisions of officials.
- Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
- Keep your children on your care under control. Parents are responsible for the supervision of
their children at games and training or should make arrangements with other parents to share
this supervision. - Parents acknowledge that while the club will seek to minimise risk, there are some risks to all
participants in an active team sport. - Parents are expected to advise the club of any relevant player medical issues.
- In an emergency and it is not possible or reasonably practical to contact parents the Association may obtain medical treatment for the child.
- Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials.
- What is said in the car on the way home can be damaging to the team dynamics.
- Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during competition.
- Always be positive.
- Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches or players.
- Show respect for your team’s opponents, without them, there would be no game.
- Do not raise issues of disagreement publicly.
- Do not put out any surveys or questionnaires or petitions to the team.
- Do not undermine the coach behind the scenes.
- Do not offer the coach, team manager or officials any form of gift, money or tokens of
appreciation during the season as this may be seen as bribery. An end of season ‘team gift’ to the coach and team manager will be considered acceptable. - Do not criticize opposing team members or supporters by word or gesture.
- Coaching your child from the sideline during the game is not accepted at our club. Do not call out instructions or approach the players during the game. This may be confusing given the players need to follow the coaches’ instructions. Only give positive comments to players.
- Do not approach the coaches after a game complaining about issues. Call or text them the following day to make a time at trainings to discuss your concerns.
- Do not approach referees at any time. Not before, during or after games. The referee/supervisor has the power to eject any spectator from the stadium at their discretion. Failure to leave can be a reportable offence & the game forfeited by your team.
- Show respect and appreciation for volunteers, coaches, officials and administrators.
- Abide by all Southern Basketball Associations policies and procedures as outlined on the
website. - Only use social media as a positive outlet to promote players, teams, clubs and others involved in basketball and adhere to the Southern Basketball Association’s Social Media Policy.
- Should you decide to withdraw from the program of your own accord, please do not expect a
refund of fees. - Teams have been selected by a coaching panel with final decisions approved by the Director or Coaching. Selection is based on player ability, work ethic and team balance. There may be
movement of players in the grading phase to ensure team balance.
By enrolling your child in the Melbourne Wolves Basketball Club and the Southern Basketball Association competition you are agreeing to abide to the conditions outlined in this Parent Code of Conduct & Expectations agreement and Basketball Victoria’s Code of Conduct.
