Player Code of Conduct & Expectations

– Melbourne Wolves Basketball Club –

CODE OF CONDUCT

The Melbourne Wolves Basketball Club’s Codes of Conduct & Expectations are aligned with Southern Basketball Association and Basketball Victoria to give participants a guide to the expectations of Southern Basketball Association and Basketball Victoria for their behaviour and conduct.

Basketball is a recreational activity for enjoyment and health. The BV codes of conduct can be located at:

http://basketballvictoria.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/BVALL_Codes_of_Conduct.pdf

The Codes of Conduct & Expectations are intended to assist players, coaches, administrators, parents and spectators to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their involvement in basketball.

As a Melbourne Wolves player you must be fully committed to abiding by the Player Code of Conduct & Expectations by signature. It is critical that each player understands the Southern Basketball Association Player Code of Conduct & Expectations and is familiar with the behavioural and attitudinal expectations of every Melbourne Wolves player.

A breach of the Player Code of Conduct & Expectations may result in disciplinary action by the club Committee, SBA Committee, a Tribunal or the VJBL and may result in team omission, suspension or deregistration.

PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT & EXPECTATIONS

  • Respect Referees and Officials. Never argue with an official. If you disagree, have your captain, coach or manager approach the referee during a break or after the game in an appropriate & polite manner.
  • Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, coaches, team mates and administrators is not acceptable or permitted in basketball.
  • Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you.
  • Play by the rules and be a good sport.
  • Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player.
  • Cooperate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition.
  • Respect and listen to the advice of your coach and try to apply it to practice and in games.
  • Play for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents and coaches.
  • Be inclusive and respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person, regardless of their gender, race, ability, cultural background, conflict, religion or other factor irrelevant to the game and avoid the use of derogatory language
  • Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
  • Everyone wins and losses at some time. Be a fair winner and a good loser.
  • Understand that playing representative basketball is a commitment, players are expected to attend all training sessions and games.
  • Remember you are representing your club and you must wear the Melbourne Wolves uniform with pride and you must arrive and leave stadiums on match day in Melbourne Wolves uniform i.e. playing uniform, warm up top, hoodie. Non club clothing is not to be worn during warm up or while sitting on team bench. No jewellery at training or games.
  • Adhere to Melbourne Wolves and SBA’s social media policy and all other policies on website.
  • Be a good sportsman/sportswoman and bring a good attitude to training and games.
  • Both trainings are essential as this is where you will learn, arrive early with shoes on and stretches completed ready to start training on time. If you do not train your court time may be compromised.
  • If you are unable to make it to trainings or games you must call the coach and team manager.
  • If you are injured you must still come to trainings and games as you can still learn. Only illness, camp or school functions should keep you away from training or games.
  • Be organised. Arrive at games 30 minutes prior to start time. Ensure your shoes are on, stretches done, roll and place you bag and drink bottle on the bench in a tidy manner prior to the beginning of the game.
  • Listen to the coach and follow instructions. Do not interrupt. Ask any important and relevant questions when the coach has finished talking.
  • It is the coaches job to give instruction to players. You should only give respectful comments and encouragement to team mates. You are not permitted to follow coaching instructions or advice from parents or spectators.
  • Players need to understand that in Rep basketball you are not always given equal court time.
  • Court time is earned by the right attitude, skill level, training, attendance and development.
  • The coach will sub you when the time is right. Do not ask to go on the court or tell the coach whose turn it is to sub.
  • If you have an issue with something on or off the court talk to your coach.
  • Players who receive 3 tech fouls will be suspended for 1 game by the VJBL
  • Players who receive 2 tech fouls will be suspended for 1 game by the club
  • No mobile phones are to be used at trainings & games.
  • By enrolling in the Southern Basketball Association competition you are agreeing to abide to the conditions outlined in this Player Code of Conduct & Expectations agreement and Basketball Victoria’s Code of Conduct.
