Sit Down with Coach Jeremy Gu: VJBL Glory, the Rangers and a Fairytale Season

Fresh off a VJBL championship and a new coaching role with the Dandenong Rangers, one of our most dedicated coaches took the time to chat with us about the season, his journey, and his love for the game. Here is our conversation.
Wolves: Hi Jeremy, congratulations on both winning the VJBL champion and becoming a coach at the Dandenong Rangers.
Jeremy: Thank you, I appreciate it.
Wolves: Can you tell us a bit more about the win?
Jeremy: That win was the definition of team effort. The boys played so well in their roles and parts to lift the team, and the effort defensively got us over the line. It was a fairytale season, I cannot ask for a better team than this.
Wolves: That's awesome. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your involvement at Wolves and the Rangers?
Jeremy: I currently coach multiple teams at Wolves, from U12 to U16. I've been at Wolves for more than 3 years now — definitely a great experience and I'd recommend our club to anyone. Aside from Melbourne Wolves domestic teams, I'm going to be coaching the Dandenong Rangers VJBL U16 next rep season, with the teams still to be decided at tryouts, so the team I'll be coaching is yet to be announced.
Wolves: Wow, your life is fulfilled with basketball! Could you share with us — what makes you love basketball so much?
Jeremy: The love and passion of all the players all around me! The nation's love for basketball and seeing all my friends and my players have fun with this sport is for sure what makes me love it!
Wolves: That's great. Now as a coach, what do you look for in a team? And what do you look for in a player?
Jeremy: I value effort and hard work in my teams and in a player. Those are the keys to success in this sport, and that proves to be very true throughout my years in playing and coaching.
Wolves: Who's your favourite player?
Jeremy: Don't exactly have a favourite player — I love everyone on the team equally and they're all brilliant!
Wolves: And what about your favourite team?
Jeremy: Gotta be the 2025-26 Sabres boys 12.7s team! I cannot express how lucky I am to be a part of that group, and to lead them for the year. These boys work so well together, and put in so much effort every game and training even when they're sick and tired, without complaining, without being lazy a slightest bit. That's why this team will forever be my favourite.
Wolves: What's been the biggest challenge this season so far?
Jeremy: Waking up at 7am every Sunday for training — haha! I think the biggest challenge is definitely trying to improve as a team and as a group, but we've definitely overcome that together!
Wolves: What's been the biggest achievement this season so far?
Jeremy: This VJBL championship of course — all the hard work paid off for the boys, and I'm super proud of all of them for their resilience, dedication and effort this season!
Wolves: Thank you so much Jeremy, you are doing an awesome job! A lot of our young players look up to you — keep up the good work mate!
Jeremy: Thank you.
Congratulations again to Jeremy on a stunning season and his exciting new chapter with the Dandenong Rangers. We can't wait to see what he achieves next — and we're proud to have him in the Wolves family.
Let's go Wolves!
