Guide For Coaches

Everything you need to know to lead and develop young basketball players.

Welcome to our coaching page!

First of all, hats off to you for taking on this role!

On behalf of the players and parents we say THANK YOU. It takes a rare breed to put their hand up to coach a team of kids, especially after they've had a busy day at school! This page contains information for new coaches, returning coaches, frequently asked questions, a basic training guide, and useful links. We have parent coaches that have never played basketball before, to professional coaches that live and breathe everything basketball! There is a pathway for every coach, and we are more than happy to help you on your journey, no matter where you are starting.

Be sure to take part in our Exclusive Melb Wolves WORKSHOPS where our President, Vice President and Head of Coaching create specific drills for your team, answer questions, and support you with whatever you need as a coach. Contact us for details!

Recommended

1

Download MyHoops (iOS link, Android link), and GloryLeague for video recordings of the game.

2

Liaise with your Team Manager and allocate your team to a court time for weekly training sessions.

3

Choose a Team Captain. This can be any of the players, and will be listed on your team webpage. Your team webpage can be found on our website and will contain information about your team, players, and accomplishments.

4

Have a think about what type of coach you want to be, and start collecting fun drills/games or ideas for your team training. If you need some help to get started please see the Training Template below.

5

Familiarise yourself with the basic Rules of Basketball. The younger age group referees understand that many parent coaches are new to the game and often spend extra time explaining common rules to the players during the match.

6

Book yourself into our Melb Wolves Workshops. Beginner workshops run in Term 1 and 3, and you're more than welcome to come to the Advanced Wolves Workshops that run in Term 2 and 4. Every workshop is created specifically for the coaches attending, helping you get the best out of your team. Contact us for more information.

Game Specific Tasks

1

In the lead up to games;

Make sure you have enough players to compete. You are allowed to play with 4 players (we highly advise you take two time outs per half), or you can get Fill-In or Emergency players to help. Please try your best to play all your games as there is a hefty forfeit fee for any missed games, plus any forfeit means the team loses 0:20.

Fill-In players are players that are registered to the Melbourne Wolves Club but not in your team. If you have 5 players, you are permitted to have a Fill-In player for your 6th player. Fill-In players need to be in a lower grade than your team (not the same grade). Fill-In players from a lower age group in C and D grade are permitted. Fill-In players from a lower age group in A and B grade are permitted only if your team is A or B grade. Please note that a Fill-In player's points cannot exceed 14 points. You can use the same Fill-In player three times in a season. You can use multiple Fill-In players (different players).

An Emergency player is someone that is not registered to the Melbourne Wolves Club. If you have 4 players, you are permitted to have an Emergency player for your 5th player. You can use an Emergency player once only. You can use multiple Emergency players (different players).

If required, please contact Rachael (0409232409) for a spare uniform, making sure the spare jersey number does not clash with your current players. We kindly ask that uniforms be dropped to a residential Beaumaris parcel box immediately after the game. The parcel box is located within 5 minutes of the Tulip St Stadium. As we require the jersey straight after the game, we understand you cannot wash it. Please note we launder spare uniforms in a skin-sensitive detergent.

We recommend you collect your Emergency or Fill-In player details prior to the game as their details will need to be entered into the scorer's ipad prior to the game (full name, date of birth, contact email, jersey number). It's also a good idea to make contact with the Melb Wolves coach in the age group below your team. Their players may need to help you out from time to time. Your players may be needed to help out the age group above them too!

2

On Game Day;

You will be permitted free entry into the stadium. There will be a clipboard upon entry for coaches to sign. Remind the players to put their belongings to one side of the scoring bench. If we are listed as the Home team, the team sits to the right (if you are standing on the court and looking at the scoring bench). Remind players to put their water bottles close to you as this is where they will be seated for breaks.

Remind the players to tape earrings, remove watches and any baggy undergarments. Warm up is usually a few minutes before the allocated game time.

After the game, players usually line up to high-five the other team, and coaches acknowledge each other. Please keep in mind our club values and lead your team in being respectful. If there are any score discrepancies, now is the time to sort it out with the referees.

Remember to hand out the Royal Stack's Coach's Award/MVP burger voucher after each game. You can allocate this to any player for any achievement e.g. Most Improved, Best Sportsmanship.

There is little time to chat with players after games as the next team is usually waiting to use the court. Please be mindful of lingering and move your team to the foyer if you need to have a lengthy post-game chat.

Training Guide

1

Start each training with a quick chat that discusses what went well/not so well in the previous game.

2

Include a warm up and/or stretching.

3

Incorporate Basketball Specific Strength and Conditioning

We've had more and more requests from parents for Strength and Conditioning sessions. Usually it's our players wanting a pathway to rep teams.

Most of our coaches (and older players) find free online videos that they weave into their training sessions. However, if you would like to have a customised strength and conditioning training session made up for your team, please contact Rachael for more details.

4

Focus on drills that reduce player waiting time. This should be the majority of your training session. Be observant for player engagement, and if the drills you have chosen are challenging enough. Scaffold drills, add constraints, be ready to break down challenging drills. Depending on the age of your players, you may need to add motivational rewards or a point system to keep their focus. Be ready to change things up if your plan is not working! Coaches often feel they never have enough time with their players, so prioritise drills that will have the biggest impact on your game, cater to the majority of your players, and run the drills that can't be done at home.

5

Get competitive in a scrimmage (informal) game. Try to simulate real-game conditions between teammates (or with another team that may be training with you). Work on team chemistry and communication. Players often look forward to this part of training the most, so use it as your dangling carrot to get cooperation in the drills.

6

Wrap up. Summarise key learning moments, give upcoming game reminders, set optional homework/challenges. Please leave the training facility tidy and in a timely manner.
